Write Fifth Paragraph In Notebook Over The Weekend! Period Six Will Have Some Time On Monday To Finish Quiz!

Today we read Chapter 5 and went over some of the new vocabulary words and ideas.

We got back questions we answered about chapters 4 and 5.

We took a quiz on chapters 4 and 5.

Finish FIFTH PARAGRAPH in Grammar and Mechanics Notebook. Remember to mention the reasons you would like to trade places for a day with your specific person and an example to support each reason in the last paragraph. Use a real clincher for a closing sentence. Seven sentences is about the least number you should use. TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!!

Great Writing Today! READ BELOW!!!!!

Remember to complete 4 well-organized paragraphs in your Grammar and Mechanics Notebook. No paragraph shoud be less than 7 sentences and each paragraph should be loaded with rich language and detail.

Opening paragraph, First of all,  (least importance) Next, ( medium importance) Finally, (greatest importance). THESE ARE THE FOUR PARAGRAPHS WHICH SHOULD BE COMPLETED FOR HOMEWORK TONIGHT!

We will work on the concluding paragraph during class tomorrow.

Fill In Your "Planning Your Composition" Sheet We Began In Class Today.

Remember to fill in the front side with "My Ideas" and "Support for Ideas" then turn the paper over and complete"Topic Sentences" and "Concluding or Transition Senctences."  Tomorrow we will put everything together.

Don't forget the word choice, figurative language, spelling and punctuation and strong opening and closing sentences.

Choose a character from the book: BRING IN MAGAZINES, SCISSORS AND GLUESTICKS.

Write down 10 adjectives to describe the character (colorful, sparkle words).

Cut out letters from magazines or newspspers to spell the words. You may also print them on your computer in different colrs and fonts (no smaller than 18 font).

Cut out pictures from magazines to help illustrate your character ( DO NOT IDENTIFY YOUR CHARACTER).

Finish Up Answering Questions For Chapters 1 and 2. READ BELOW!

You received a list of words, definitions and parts of speech for Chapters 1-3. These should ALL be copied into your Vocabulary/Note-taking Notebook.

On the other side of the vocabulary sheet is a list of questions.  # 1-11 should be filled in on the actual sheet.

# 5-9 are from Chapters 1 and 2 and should be answered in complete sentences in your Vocabulary/Note-taking Notebook.

We received our writing and multiple choice back from Panama Canal and a Vocabulary Test from last week. We will work on improving our writing over the next few weeks.

Please make sure all the information mentioned on yesterday's blog is likewise copied into your notebook. For example: Copy all the facts regarding genre, antagonist and figurative language into your notebook. Look at the blog from January 9, 2014 if you forget.

READ CAREFULLY! YOU WILL DO FINE SINCE YOU HAVE READ THE STORY!

1. Know the names and ages of the 4 Logan children and the adult members' names (oldest to youngest). You do not need to know the ages of the adults.

2. Know that the book is historical fiction when asked about the genre.

3. Make sure you know that the story took place during The Great Depression (1933) and that it takes place in Mississippi.

4. Papa (David) Logan is working on the railroad in Louisiana to make money to pay for the taxes and the mortgage.

5. Study the examples of figurative language we discussed on Wednesday. Be able to identify and other examples of similes, metaphors, personification, and alliteration.

Hey Kids!

Homework is to bring in an image and brief write up from your computer about The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl and/or The Stock Market Crash! You can bring in something from one of these events or all three! We are going to construct a bulletin board in the hall.

Also, be on the lookout for any news items which deal with Martin Luther King Jr and/or racism. You might be surprised that it has not completely gone away.

Welcome Back To School!

Today, we wrote about some "resolutions" for the 2014 school year. We all have areas that need some improvement.......ME TOO! We brainstormed for about 15 minutes then focussed on two specific areas in which we need to improve. We will finish this exercise in our Grammar and Mechanics Notebook.

Then we took a look at the MCAS packet we had for homework. We went through the strategies from the BRAIN DUMP and put them to use. We will continue tomorrow.
